A realistic approach to the problem of measuring the reliability of a long life mechanical system is addressed by describing the procedures used and the results achieved in the gas turbine reliability program at the Naval Ship Engineering Center, Philadelphia Division. Failure criteria and classification, data collection and computer processing, and the statistical analysis of data are presented. The problems, benefits, and some of the common misconceptions regarding reliability and availability testing of developmental equipment and the use of early test data for Reliability, Maintainability and Availability (RMA) assessments are considered.
