A LIVE DEMONSTRATION OF ENGINE REPAIR ASSISTANCE BY SATELLITE FROM THE CONFERENCE TO A SHIP AT SEA

This article describes how with the use of compressed video through an Inmarstat HSD channel, a diesel expert will be able to assist engineers on board vessels any where in the world at any time without actually having to travel to the vessel. The diesel expert will not only be able to discuss the problem and possible actions with the engineers on board, he will also be able to share the same computer application describing graphically each detail of the engine to be repaired or serviced. He will be able to watch the engineer when he is performing the agreed operations and provide continuous instructions regarding the right tools and procedures. When the malfunction is attended to, the diesel expert will also be able to see that relevant settings and tolerances are properly maintained before the engine is restarted.
