The book presents a system study of substructure and foundation elements, introducing an independent design methodology demonstrating compliance with AASHTO and other relevant specifications. A large number of detailed design examples and case studies are given in each chapter to illustrate the use of both the stress method and the load factor design approach. Bridge design is moving towards a more rational and probability-based procedure. Pier types, abutments, wall systems and foundation elements are reviewed. Loads and loading groups are discussed and methods of design and analysis are reviewed. Conventional piers and piers for special bridge types, including cable-stayed bridges, are considered. Wall and abutment types and configurations are reviewed. Bridge foundations, including shallow footings, driven piles, drilled shaft foundations, prismatic and linear foundations are discussed. A brief outline is given of common strengthening and rehabilitation procedures.
