Several types of equipment meeting important design criteria are described. No single solution is proposed because of the relative importance of different parameters in different conditions. Hydraulic loading by a regulated high-pressure supply can be used in a laboratory. Loading frames can be installed as required. Portability and temperature variations restrict the choice of apparatus for site use; the author suggests that existing equipment could be improved by the use of a self contained rig comprising A light low-stiffness frame and flexible-diaphragm jack. A small gas-charged bladder accumulator used in conjunction with a hand-pump can provide suitable load stabilisation. Since it is suggested that wider variations of applied stress are to be allowed for site testing, further development of a low-stiffness frame could be worthwhile. The author describes a rig using slender prestressing wires and heavy take-up bolts reducing the loss when the load is adjusted by a temporary jack. /TRRL/
