PERFORMANCE OF REINFORCED APPROACH FILLS AT THE OZONE BRIDGE - A FOLLOW-UP STUDY. FINAL REPORT

The Ozone Bridge, located approximately 25 miles (40 km) west of Cheyenne, Wyoming on Interstate 80, was reconstructed in 1987. The two bridge decks and the four approach slabs were removed and replaced. In addition, the upper portions of the approach embankments were rebuilt using four different geotextile reinforcement techniques to reduce long term maintenance costs. The embankments were instrumented to compare lateral and vertical stress and deformations caused by the different procedures. This report describes the changes that have occurred in the four years of service since reconstruction. One embankment was constructed with the geotextile wrapped against the abutment wall while two others were built with an initial gap of 2 and 6 in. (50 and 150 mm) between the geotextile and the abutment wall. The purposes of the gaps were to place the fabric under tension before the wall had a chance to move and to reduce the lateral stress developed by the soil on the back wall of the abutment. The lateral stress on the first wall is essentially geostatic, indicating that the geotextile does not have any influence on the stress. The lateral stress is essentially zero on the walls with the gaps, indicating the fabric is supporting the soil. The deformations in the three embankments are similar. The fourth embankment had minimal excavation (enough to install a drain pipe). It has shown the greatest amount of movement of the four embankments.
