SAFETY AUDITORS VIEW OF NEW ROUNDABOUT DESIGN. WEST MIDLANDS ROAD SAFETY AUDIT FORUM

The report provides a breakdown of the common problems together with evidence to back up observations made in a safety audit. The publication is aimed at safety auditors and designers needing supplementary advice on safety problems; it does not fully cover design standards but is a working document establishing good and bad practice. Examples are given of sites in the West Midlands, where the accidents at ten roundabouts accounted for almost half the total number at 123 normal roundabouts. Several sites are examined to illustrate problems associated with entry path curvature and angles, visibility, two-wheeled vehicles and pedestrians. Other problems discussed are those of entry width, high speed circulating traffic, skidding resistance, signing and level changeover. Advice is given on possible solutions and a list of accident sites is provided to provide data in support of the problems identified.
