SHEARING STRENGTHS OF KAOLINITE, ILLITE, AND MONTMORILLONITE

The author comments on points made by discussers regarding the effective angle of internal friction. Comments are made on the curve of effective angle of internal friction versus plasticity index presented by Terzaghi and Peck. This curve was intended to apply to both remolded and undistrubed soils, the relationship is restricted to clays of moderate to low sensitivity under drained conditions, and the amount of scatter cannot be determined due to lack of data in the plot. An attempt was made to correlate the effective angle of internal friction with plasticity index using all the data found in the literature. The resulting correlation (illustrated) shows that (considering the scatter) it is difficult to draw any definitive conclusions. Considering that the plasticity index is determined using completely remolded soil, it is likely that only the effective angle of internal friction of remolded soils or the residual value (effective residual angle of internal are likely to correlate with the plasticity index. Observations are also made on data relating to Atterberg limits.
