INVESTING IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT

INVESTEREN IN OPENBAAR VERVOER

The position of public transport in The Netherlands has decreased steadily since the 1960's. With prosperity the ownership and use of the car are on the advance. The road network has been much extended and technical developments have made the ratio between price and quality of the car more and more attractive for the passenger. The strong growth of mobility is translated into the always growing use of the car. Central government has unintentionally contributed to the stimulation of the car use. At the same time, central government no longer finances all the costs of public transport companies. Now, investments in public transport are needed to decrease car. Investments are needed for a better public transport network, more service, more accessibility, lower operational costs, marketing by the transport companies, and flexibility.
