A highly successful effort is described in which reversible contraflow bus lanes and priority car pool lanes has substantially increased the number of riders and the speed with which they are transported. This demonstration project used the roadway geometrics including the median in left-turn bays. However, left turns are prohibited during rush periods which extend the green 26 percent, and are replaced by a series of right-turn ground loops. Variable message signs control the lanes with the aid of rubber safety posts in the case of the contraflow bus lane. Rush hour and nonrush hour signs are described and some negative reactions to the project are mentioned.
