DEVELOPMENT OF A KNOWLEDGE-BASED SYSTEM FOR GROUND INVESTIGATION IN SOIL AND ROCK. PAPER TO BE PUBLISHED IN PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCES IN SITE INVESTIGATION PRACTICES TO BE HELD AT THE INSTITUTION OF CIVIL ENGINEERS ON 30 AND 31 MARCH 1995, SPONSORED BY ISSMFE, BGS AND AGS

A knowledge-based system for ground investigation on Scottish trunk road projects is being developed. The objective is to increase the cost-effectiveness of such investigations. The initial structure is common to both soil and rock and reflects the common division of a ground investigation into preliminary, main and additional phases. The paper describes the initial structure and gives further information on more detailed aspects of ground investigation procedures in both soil and rock. Applications include the design of ground investigations, the checking of procedures followed in existing or planned investigations, and training. (A)
