HAZARDOUS AIR POLLUTANTS: THE LONDON WORKSHOP

The purpose of the workshop was to discuss current assessments of the hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) problem, the variety of different control strategies being pursued and the need for member country work in this and related fields. For OECD purposes HAPs have been broadly defined as: gaseous, aerosol or particulate containments present in ambient air in trace amounts with characteristics (eg toxicity and persistence) that make them a hazard to human health, plants or animal life. The countries represented at the workshop shared similar concerns with respect to HAPs. The problems of controlling HAPs will require substantial regulatory efforts and new prevention and control approaches, using a variety of policy instruments. In particular, controlling the numerous mobile and diffuse sources will be a major challenge.
