VIBRATION RESEARCH WITH EMPLOYEES WORKING IN THE FIELD OF EARTHWORKS, ROAD CONSTRUCTION AND HYDRAULICS: EXPOSURE OF BEAM WORKERS TO PHYSICAL VIBRATIONS

This study report was written as part of the author's study at the Post Hogere Opleiding Veiligheidskunde (PHOV). The exposure of beam workers employed in road construction to physical vibrations is studied. Beam workers are the people that stand on the finisher smoothing beam of an asphalt paver to operate this beam during the spreading of asphalt pavements. They control the construction of the right road profile. The following issues are discussed: (a) aspects of vibrations; (b) exposure risks; (c) standards; (d) control measures; (e) assessment criteria; (f) risk inventory and risk evaluation; (g) control strategies. A measurement program that was carried out is discussed. It is concluded that the exposure to vibrations exceeds the standard in several cases. Solutions are presented to eliminate or reduce the exposure to physical vibrations.
