WILDLIFE CROSSINGS FOR ROADS AND WATERWAYS: HABITAT FRAGMENTATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE

This brochure is a summary of the Dutch report "Handreiking maatregelen voor de fauna langs weg en water" (Guide to facilities for fauna at roads and waterways). It presents state-of-the-art techniques for making wildlife crossings at roads and waterways in the Netherlands. The fragmentation of animal habitats by infrastructural works is discussed, followed by the policy response to this problem of the Dutch government. Regional cooperation in this field is stressed. Three types of mitigating measures are discussed: (1) reducing the number of casualties on the roads and by drowning; (2) enabling safe passage across roads and canals; and (3) reducing disturbance by traffic. Wildlife crossings for amphibians, small to medium-sized mammals, large mammals, and birds are described. These include tunnels, fences, guiding walls, badger fencing, tree-stump walls, speed ramps, ecoducts, warning mirrors and reflectors, road closures, and bankside waterway crossings.
