PRINCIPLES AND RELATIONSHIPS OF PARKING AND TRIP GENERATION RATES

This paper presents a method which uses fundamental principles to analytically derive parking and traffic generation rates. The method requires that inbound and outbound driveway counts be used as a basis for both parking generation and traffic generation surveys; and that the peak parking accumulation and the peak traffic generation rates be calculated from the driveway counts using standard-form equations. For any given time period, the traffic generation is the sum of the inbound and outbound traffic; while the parking accumulation is the difference between the total inbound and total outbound traffic, plus the initial accumulation.
