OVERVIEW OF SOME RURAL ROAD REHABILITATION PROJECTS

With prevailing trends of limited financing for both construction and maintenance, the South African road network is ageing significantly. The authors believe that with ongoing restricted funding, in the decade ahead cost effective rehabilitation of rural road pavements will be of critical importance. This paper reviews fifteen rehabilitation projects giving details of general conditions, geometrics, pavement layers, rehabilitation designs, traffic accommodation, performance and costs. Differences are highlighted, the relative merits of the solutions are considered and where appropriate recommendations are made for future design.
