The world of bitumen and asphalt is in a state of change due to a spectrum of technological advancements, environmental considerations and considerable increase in the intensity of road use. The paper describes the related issues, developments and driving forces, the effect these are having on the quality requirements of bitumens as well as the need for speciality bitumens. The requirements imposed on present and future asphalts and surface treatments in terms of resistance to rutting, fatting-up, thermal and traffic-related fatigue and adhesion are reaching the limits of what can be achieved with conventional raw materials and are opening up the way to bitumen specialities. The latter may also result from mandatory use of lower quality materials. All of the above have given a new impetus to bitumen and asphalt technology.
