RECOMMENDED MIX TESTING AND ANALYSIS SYSTEMS RESULTING FROM SHRP CONTRACT A-003A

Two objectives of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) Project A-003A were to develop a series of accelerated performance tests (APTs) for asphalt-aggregate mixes and recommendations for their use in mix design and analysis systems. In this paper the tests developed to define fatigue behaviour, permanent deformation response, aging, and water sensitivity are discussed in detail. A comprehensive review of the research conducted in the low temperature area is found elsewhere. A comprehensive mix design/analysis system, proposed for use of the tests to predict mix performance as tempered by aging and water sensitivity, is described. Specimen compaction is also briefly discussed including its influence on mix properties. (A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 873950.
