SOME NEW APPROACHES TO EVALUATION OF ROAD SURFACES

This study proposes a new method to evaluate pavement surface conditions employing a stochastic approach and fractal geometry. First, a new calculation method that can display two-dimensional pavement surface profiles is proposed to solve the problems regarding various vehicle dynamics affected by road surfaces. In addition, fractal geometry is expected to be a powerful tool in the evaluation of cracking and pavement roughnesses through the concept of fractal dimensions. Several fractal dimensions are calculated and applicability of the concept to pavement surface conditions is discussed. (A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 873950.
