PERMANENT DEFORMATION CONSIDERATIONS IN ASPHALT-AGGREGATE MIX DESIGN

New concepts for asphalt-aggregate mix design have been developed during the Strategic Highway Research Program Project A-003A. This paper presents some of those concepts regarding the evaluation of rutting propensity using the repetitive simple shear test at constant height. This procedure permits site specific estimations of rut depth, due to accumulation of permanent deformation in the mix, taking into consideration environment (moisture damage, aging and temperature) and traffic, within agency selectable reliability levels.
