MODIFICATION AND RESTORATION OF DEFORMED ASPHALT SURFACING USING THE HOT IN-SITU REMIX PROCESS

This paper describes the investigation of the gap-graded asphalt surfacing layer along a section of Durban Outer Ring Road which had rutted severely over a period of 14 years. The design of modifications to the asphalt mix to increase its resistance to deformation is also described. Four full scale field trials which were carried out using the hot in-situ remixing process are described as well as laboratory testing of the recycled asphalt layer to evaluate the improvements to the deformation behaviour of the layer.
