DESIGN OF CONCRETE-LINED TUNNEL CROSS-SECTIONS IN ROCK

DIMENSIONERING AV UTSTOEPTE TUNNEL-TVERRSNITT I FJELL

Two tunnel projects in Oslo, Norway, are presented. The paper deals primarily with tunnels in rock and with some problems which are encountered in connection with concrete-lined tunnel cross sections in general. The loads which act on the cross section of the tunnel comprise the water pressure, the rock pressure, the loads due to the super-incumbent foundations, and the superimposed dead loads. The static system that would comply with the requirements for an accurate design of the concrete-lined tunnel cross section would be relatively complicated, but by using electronic data processing equipment and element methods satisfactory solutions are achieved. Alternative methods are compared: plane two dimensional elements, deep beam elements and shallow beam elements, the structure being regarded as a close frame. The comparison indicates that sufficiently accurate solutions of complicated problems can be found by using relatively simple methods. /TRRL/
