THE BASICS OF PREVENTIVE PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE

This article offers results of the workshop on preventive pavement maintenance held May 1995 in Denver, Colorado. the workshop presenters emphasized a key point: to be effective, preventive maintenance must be a program -- it must be engineered, designed, specified, constructed, and evaluated. The elements of engineering such a program include the following: Properly selecting pavement sections that will benefit from preventive maintenance treatments. Selecting and designing the specific treatments. Controlling the quality of the materials and construction. Monitoring and evaluating the performance of the treatments.
