Many organizations, fed up with the litigiousness and conflict orientation of the industry, are turning to the innovative approach of partnering in the construction process. Referred to as a return to the "old way" of doing business-of putting the "handshake" back into the process, partnering promises to dramatically change the course of the construction industry in the 90s. With so many organizations in the process of implementing partnering in their work, it would be appropriate to examine the results of the process thus far. This paper reviews the benefits and lessons learned associated with the implementation of partnering in the Arizona Department of Transportation's (ADOT) construction program in the last 15 months (1991-1992).
