NDE FOR STEEL BRIDGES

Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) is a means of detecting fatigue cracks hidden by paint in steel bridges. NDE can also be used to quantify fatigue loading. This article describes research and development activities of the Federal Highway Administration to develop new bridge inspection tools. The systems currently under investigation include: ultrasonic-magnetic crack detection, acoustic emission systems, fatigue-loading indicator, and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. A sidebar describes NDE field testing using resonant ultrasound spectroscopy.
