SGC: THE BACKBONE OF SUPERPAVE
The Superpave Gyratory Compactor (SGC) is grabbing space in the laboratories of state departments of transportation across the nation. This new piece of equipment, which combines principles of the Texas gyratory compactor and the French gyratory compactor, is used for preparing and determining the density of hot mix asphalt specimens. The Superpave system was developed by the Strategic Highway Research Program. This brief article describes the components of the SGC, its use in the laboratory and in the field, and its role in the Superpave mix design and analysis system.
