SOME FACTORS AFFECTING THE CAPACITY OF A SERIES OF SIGNALISED INTERSECTIONS

Performance characteristics of intersections are examined to explore the possibility of improving the main stream capacity of a weak intersection. Input and output characteristics of a typical intersection are considered as a means of identifying weak intersections. The effect of queue length on capacity is discussed. The treatment considers only saturated bands, though it is thought that free-flowing bands are only encountered between the first few intersections and that they may be treated in a similar fashion. /TRRL/
