CONTRACTORS GAIN CONTROL OF VOLUMETRIC PROPERTIES WITH FIELD MANAGEMENT

Field management advocates believe that building good pavements is the result of viewing the overall process--mix design, structural design, and construction--as a single one. This article conveys the field management philosophy for hot mix asphalt pavements, which includes four key elements: 1) contractor responsibility for the manufacturing process; 2) construction process viewed in its entirety; 3) process control for high quality design and construction; and 4) fully integrated mix design, structural design, and construction. The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) has a multi-staged project to develop a step-by-step process for field management of hot mix asphalt construction. Information presented in this article is a compilation of NAPA activities.
