EXPLORING THE LINK BETWEEN TRANSPORTATION AND THE ENVIRONMENT

An issue paper called TRANSLINK 21--developed by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT)--identifies key transportation-related environmental issue areas and strategies, and a range of possible alternative roles for WisDOT in these areas. This article examines the link between transportation and the environment, focusing on trends in land use, travel cost, travel growth, fuel and vehicle technology, and regulations. Key environmental issues discussed include air quality, physical environment, energy, and global climate change. A sound understanding of the link between transportation and the environment and the development of responsible policies to foster that relationship are the goals of TRANSLINK 21.
