THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING HISTORICAL: CIVIL ENGINEERS AND THEIR HISTORY. DISCUSSION

A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by Jane Morley, published in this journal (Volume 120, Number 4, October 1994), is presented. The discussion focuses on the importance of technology in the history of civil engineering. Moonasingha states that the technology of past civil engineering serves two purposes: 1) to appraise the strength, load-carrying capacity, and safety before restoring or improving for the purpose of present and future use and 2) to preserve for the sake of archaeological and monumental values. No closure is offered by the author.
