ACCELERATING ITS DEPLOYMENT: A REPORT FROM THE U.S. DOT
Intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) are a reality for many metropolitan areas. ITS applications can be seen in integrated traffic control systems, incident response systems, electronic toll collection, as well as others. This article reports the unlikelihood of ITS deployment as the procurement of a brand new system, but rather separate ITS purchases as upgrades, expansions, or replacements. The goal, then, becomes "smart" buying or buying components of an integrated system that will become the enabling platform for later ITS purchases. Seven steps are given for local transportation professionals to determine needs and set priorities. Steps for the federal government--funding, architecture, standards, training, and model deployment--are described as well.
