Improved service to customers, improved equipment utilization, and more cost-effective operations are leading transit officials to intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technologies. Many questions remain, though, regarding ITS deployment within a transit organization, integration of ITS operations, and effective strategies for ITS procurement. This article previews a white paper on transit ITS. Seven factors deemed critical for successful deployment of transit ITS are: 1) standardization; 2) intermodalism mindset; 3) accurate, complete, and current foundation databases and systems; 4) view information as integral part of transit service; 5) make transit easier to use; 6) broad-based professional involvement and sharing of experiences; and 7) effective institutional support.
