THINKING SMALL: APPLYING ITS TECHNOLOGIES TO TDM

The application of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technologies to travel demand management (TDM) is the subject of this article, which advocates the marriage of the two. The author reports that the effects of the TDM/ITS combination can be serendipitous: advanced technology can enhance the management of travel demand and TDM can provide opportunities for the application of ITS technologies. The five areas in which opportunities exist are: 1) pre-trip planning, 2) parking management, 3) congestion pricing, 4) telecommuting, and 5) transit service enhancements. Examples of applications in each area are provided. Although the hype in ITS technologies centers on futuristic navigation systems and collision avoidance, the reality is that ITS technologies have practical applications in the TDM field.
