THE NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION COMMUNICATIONS/ITS PROTOCOL: AN INTRODUCTION
A multi-purpose communications protocol is under development for signal systems and intelligent transportation systems (ITSs). The National Transportation Communications/ITS Protocol (NTCIP) will provide a common interface for field devices to talk with systems, establishing multivendor compatibility for essential systems communications. This article reviews the work on the NTCIP thus far, noting that it fits below the National ITS Architecture, which defines the largest-scale ITS components. A general description of how the NTCIP works is provided.
