SLIDING MODE CONTROL FOR SEISMICALLY EXCITED LINEAR STRUCTURES. TECHNICAL NOTE

The authors present continuous sliding mode control (CSMC) methods, without undesirable chattering effect, for applications to seismically excited linear structures. In terms of parametric uncertainties of the structure, the control methods are robust. The controllers have no adverse effect should actuators be saturated due to unexpected severe earthquakes. Also presented are static output controllers using only a limited number of sensors without an observer. A controller installed in each story unit of a building yields a complete compensation of the structural response and a response state vector that is reduced to zero. Numerical simulation demonstrates performance and robustness of the control methods, the applications of the static output controllers, and the control effectiveness in the event of actuator saturation. Simulation results reveal that CSMC methods are viable and attractive control techniques for applications to seismically excited linear structures.
