FROM TOWN TO COUNTRY BY LIGHT RAIL

Mounting traffic problems and the need to take environmental problems into consideration call for fresh traffic concepts that make optimal use of the infrastructure. A new generation of light rail vehicles has appeared in Germany: the dual-voltage vehicle running on tram and railway tracks in Karlsruhe and the lightweight diesel rail bus that has recently been put into service in Dueren, near Cologne. A UITP delegation traveled to Karlsruhe and Dueren to find out how these systems work and what their respective advantages are to users, transport operators and the community as a whole.
