COORDINATION BETWEEN AC VVVF ELECTRIC CAR AND ELECTRIC POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM

For the Shinkansen, a new electric car intended for an over 300 km/h running has been produced and is used. This is a VVVF (Variable Voltage Variable Frequency) electric car which has induction motors fed by self-commutated convertors using PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) method control system. There are some characteristic differences between the car with the self-commutated convertors and conventional thyristor phase-controlled electric cars. In this paper, we investigate coordination between a.c. VVVF electric car and a.c. feeding system, for example, reducing method of higher harmonics, detecting method of service interruption in contact wire, protective method, and so on.
