Problems of traffic noise measurement caused by the introduction of the Land Compensation Act are discussed. A reference site measurement technique for determining noise levels over an 18 hr period in a residential area is described. Two sets of l10 measurement equipment and 4 operators working in shifts on up to 13 sites were used. The reference site was situated in an allotment. This allowed maximum utilisation of time and equipment and minimum inconvenience to dwelling occupants. Limitations of the technique are considered. It is pointed out that since this paper was written changes have occurred in the legislation rendering some of the findings invalid. /TRRL/
