DETERMINATION OF ASPHALT EMULSION SET TIMES UTILIZING THE MODIFIED ISSA FROSTED MARBLE COHESION TESTER

In this research, the authors seek to develop a laboratory test that will indicate the emulsion's ability to develop strength during early coalescence. The modified cohesion tester utilizing a torque meter, allows us to put quantitative numbers on that strength value. The measurement of force required to dislodge the marble in a breaking emulsion will show us how the strength of the bond is developed. The emulsions used for this study included a known high quality, cationic, CRS-2 emulsion used extensively for chip seal work. This emulsion formulation has documented proof of excellent field results. The polymer modified emulsions are variations of the CRS-2 emulsion and formulated with three different polymer types. All of the emulsion formulations contain the same amount of emulsifier chemical and were manufactured by introducing the polymer into the water phase and co-milling the ingredients. Test results of those emulsions and their basic properties are included in the study.
