PUERTO RICO ROAD TAMES GEOLOGY

A 56-km (35-mi) two-lane road project in rural Puerto Rico, which connects Ponce and Arecibo, was derailed when officials learned that a planned section was designed over 12 unpluggable sinkholes and across an active landslide area. This article describes the geologic problems and the innovative solutions necessary to complete the highway. Completion is scheduled for late 1996.
