INTELLIGENT HIGHWAYS: EIGHT WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR STREET SMARTS

Technology driven-highways, known as intelligent transportation systems (ITS), apply advanced computer technology and communication systems to manage complex traffic problems on a real-time basis, allowing drivers and goods to reach their destinations more quickly and cost effectively. This article describes eight ways various smart technologies are being applied to traffic management across the nation. The eight ways to "increase street smarts" are: 1) interactive highways, 2) emergency signal priority, 3) electronic tolls, 4) geographic information systems (GIS) capabilities, 5) speed cameras, 6) seamless management across state borders, 7) work zone safety, and 8) road weather safety. ITS costs start at $50,000 per lane mile, compared to new construction at $1 million per lane mile.
