RELEASE OF IB04: REINFORCEMENT

This article provides the text of the information bulletin on concrete reinforcement, recently completed by a New Zealand working party. It first outlines the three NZ Standard Specifications for the production of steel for use in reinforced concrete, and five other NZ Standards that relate to the use of reinforcement in concrete. Several of the Standards' tables are reproduced. The article also discusses the important properties of concrete considered by the Standards, and states the requirements for good reinforcement practice. It covers the following topics: (1) grades of steel; (2) bending of steel; (3) standard hooks; (4) concrete cover; (5) spacings of reinforcements; (6) splices in reinforcement (which are only exceptionally permitted); and (7) bending and fixing tolerances. The following two methods of presentation are often used in New Zealand for designation of reinforcement: (1) method when bar being schedules are prepared; and (2) method when no schedules are prepared.
