DETERMINISTIC AND PROBABILISTIC ELABORATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL MEASURES IN CONSTRUCTION (SUMMARY): TEST PROJECT ROAD

This report is a comprehensive summary, based upon reports of several subprojects, of research that was supervised by the D 15 "Environmental measure, test project road" research committee of the Netherlands Centre for Civil Engineering Research and Codes (CUR). The method of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) was applied to two alternatives for a road structure: (1) an unreinforced cement concrete pavement; and (2) an asphaltic concrete pavement. Both alternatives had porous asphalt wearing courses. The LCA method considers the environmental aspects of a product from the winning of the raw materials to the treatment as a waste material. From the LCA method so-called environmental measures can be deduced. These are indicators denoting the environmental impact of a product. For both alternative road structures a deterministic and a probabilistic approach was elaborated with respect to environmental measures. It is concluded that the proposed method for assessing environmental measures is not an operational aid for daily engineering practice yet.
