TRAFFIC MEASURES IN RURAL AREAS

VERKEERSMAATREGELEN IN HET BUITENGEBIED

This report presents the recommendations of the "Traffic control rural areas" working group, which was supervised by the Netherlands Centre for Research and Contract Standardization in Civil and Traffic Engineering (CROW). Three types of problems regarding traffic control in rural areas in the Netherlands were investigated: (1) unwanted through traffic; (2) great differences in speed between different types of traffic; and (3) mixture of different types of traffic. To enhance the analysis of these problems and the related solutions a categorisation of roads in rural areas is suggested. A questionnaire was held among rural authorities to gather information on and experience with measures to control traffic in rural areas. Based upon the results of this questionnaire and a literature search recommendations are presented for traffic measures in rural areas. The measures are presented according to their legal or civil engineering nature.
