CHOICE OF LEVEL OFTEN OVER-SIMPLIFIED: NEW PROCEDURE OFFERS SYSTEMATIC CONSIDERATION

KEUZE HOOGTELIGGING VAAK ONGENUANCEERD: NIEUWE WERKWIJZE BIEDT SYSTEMATISCHE AFWEGING

This article describes the author's final research, called "De ontwikkeling van een werkwijze voor de bepaling van de hoogteligging van autosnelwegen en spoorlijnen" (The development of a procedure for the determination of the level of motorways and railways). First all possible alternatives for the level of an alignment are listed, and the criteria used for balancing the alternatives are assessed. These criteria can be divided into three groups: (1) the building costs; (2) the possibilities of extension; and (3) the nuisance for the environment. Next, the criteria are made operational, and the proposed procedure is developed and elaborated. Important parts of the procedure are: (a) analysis of the environment of the motorway or railway; (b) division of the alignment into sections with constant features characterizing the environment; (c) determination of the most likely levels for each section; and (d) connection of these levels to form the most likely longitudinal profiles. Finally the procedure is applied to an actual case in the Netherlands: state road A58 in the town of Etten-Leur.
