ADDED VALUE TO THE OPERATING CONTROL

TOEGEVOEGDE WAARDE AAN DE BEDRIJFSCONTROLE

This article discusses the experiences gained in the cooperation between the "Stedendriehoek" asphalt mixing plant and the KOAC-Twello laboratory in the Netherlands with the calibration of laboratory equipment and the verification of laboratory investigations on behalf of the operating control in the asphalt plant. The results of 31 asphalt mixes from the production year 1994 are presented and discussed as an example. The percentages of bitumen, mineral aggregate, and filler as determined by both organizations are discussed. Factors that influence the composition of the samples are: (a) the sampling; (b) the particle size of the material or sample; and (c) the homogeneity of the sample. A second example of the value of operating control is presented by discussing the data that were collected during the asphalt production for the N755 road in the province of Overijssel, the Netherlands. It is concluded that operating control data collected during the asphalt production are very useful and enable to judge the quality of the asphalt in a short term.
