CYCLIC CREEP TESTS ON MARS ASPHALTIC CONCRETE DRILLED CORE SPECIMENS AND ON GRAVEL ASPHALTIC CONCRETE GYRATORY SPECIMENS WITH DIFFERENT FILLERS AND PERCENTAGES OF BITUMEN: FINAL REPORT

The research described in this report was carried out by order of the Road and Hydraulic Engineering Division (DWW) of the Dutch Department for Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat). The effect of the amount of bitumen-filled air voids in the mineral aggregate of MARS (Microwave Asphalt Recycling System) asphaltic concrete (MAC) and gravel asphaltic concrete (GAC) on the axial deformation in cyclic creep tests was investigated. The tests were performed on MAC drilled core specimens compacted in the road and on GAC specimens compacted in the laboratory with the gyratory compactor. Variations were made in bitumen content (4, 5, and 6%) and in type of filler (limestone filler, fly ash filler and so-called "eigen stof"). MAC appears to deform less than GAC. GAC with a bitumen content of 4% appears to fail sooner than GAC with a bitumen content of 6%. Specimens with limestone and fly ash filler perform better than specimens with "eigen stof". The absence of the confining pressure in cyclic creep tests seems to have an important influence on the axial deformation.
