K(SUB IC) DETERMINATION ON FOUR POINT BENDING BEAMS OF SAND ASPHALT 8.5% BITUMEN 45/60

K(SUB IC)-BEPALING AAN VIERPUNTSBUIGBALKEN VAN ZANDASFALT 8.5% BITUMEN 45/60

The research described in this report was carried out as part of a cooperation between the Road and Hydraulic Engineering Division (DWW) of the Dutch Department for Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat), the Delft University of Technology, and Netherlands Pavement Consultants (NPC). Four point bending tests were carried out on sand asphalt specimens to determine the stress intensity factor K(sub Ic) and the crack growth rate. The material tested was sand asphalt with 8.5% bitumen 45/60. The specimens consisted of five beams with dimensions 450x60x60 cubic mm and six beams with dimensions 450x60x30 cubic mm. Using crack opening displacement (COD) measurements and visual crack length measurements the crack growth rate was determined with empirical relationships. The K(sub Ic) value was determined from the crack length just before brittle fracture. At the testing frequencies used, ranging from 1 to 30 Hz, creep crack growth seems to be the dominating mechanism.
