FIVE YEARS OF RESTAPLAST ON CROSSROADS IN LIMBURG

VIJF JAAR RESTAPLAST OP KRUISPUNT IN LIMBURG

This article discusses the experiences gained during a test project with the application of the Restaplast asphalt mixture. During the production of Restaplast polymer components are added to the asphalt mixture. These polyalkenes increase the resistance to deformation. Due to the relatively high binder content the fatigue properties are comparable to those of conventional asphalt. In the project Restaplast was used as a wearing course mixture to repair rutting on the crossroads of the N273 and the N279 in the Dutch province of Limburg. The following aspects are discussed: (a) preliminary investigations; (b) contract specifications; (c) construction of the Restaplast wearing course; (d) operating and quality control; (e) creep properties; (f) rutting; (g) pavement damage and repair; and (h) cost comparison with asphalt mixtures according to the Dutch RAW Standard 1990 with respect to construction and maintenance costs. Restaplast appears to be an effective measure to combat rutting on heavily trafficked roads in a durable way.
