ASSESSMENT OF THE STRUCTURAL CONSEQUENCES OF THE USE OF GRAVEL REPLACEMENT AGGREGATES IN CONCRETE

BEOORDELING VAN DE CONSTRUCTIEVE CONSEQUENTIES VAN HET TOEPASSEN VAN GRINDVERVANGENDE TOESLAGMATERIALEN IN BETON

This report presents the results of the C 79 "Concrete with gravel replacement aggregates" study committee, which was supervised by the Netherlands Centre for Civil Engineering Research and Codes (CUR). The first part of the report presents a general procedure to assess the structural consequences of the use of alternative aggregates in concrete. The second part contains the results of a literature study into the basic material properties of concrete. The report focusses on the Dutch situation. The available knowledge with regard to the basic material properties of gravel concrete and of concrete with gravel replacement aggregates is pragmatically collected and compared. The gravel replacement aggregates mainly concern light aggregates and concrete and masonry granulates. Experimental results are compared to the indications in a number of standards, viz. the Dutch NEN 6720 standard, foreign, and international standards. For many properties it appears to be hardly possible to give a reference that clearly reflects a certain property of gravel concrete, which can also be used to assess the same property for concrete with a gravel replacement aggregate.
