In response to the changing nature of bikeway planning, consultants, along with local and regional government agencies, have been slowly increasing the amount of information and the level of detail in bikeway plans. The purpose of this paper is to provide examples of how this trend is affecting bikeway planning and to recommend a general outline of the new requirements for bikeway plans that is based on solid planning principles as well as state and federal funding program requirements. The paper is intended to contribute to the resource data available to planners and engineers on how to prepare bikeway plans that meet more stringent planning and engineering requirements necessary to compete for scarce funding.
